Sources for these statistical reports include the Internet Archive and Statistics Canada. The Railway Statistics Act of 1875 required all railways to provide detailed statistical reports on an annual basis to the Department of Railways and Canals with a reporting period from July 1 to June 30 of the following year. The reporting period was changed to calendar year in 1919. In the same year, the Dominion Bureau of Statistics assumed responsibility for these reports.
